Client News 17 Apr 09
.............................
I don't mean to overwhelm you with another email so soon, but I think this is something all website owners and business owners need to hear about first-hand.
I have a sad true story to tell you about what happens when you give control of a 10 year old website to a newbie - and this has happened in the past few weeks to someone I know extremely well.
How to lose all your pages and all your search engine rankings built up over ten years - in one click by trusting a non-website person
I've been working with a client for around ten years to help build her website into something she was proud of, a membership-based website which had visitors - and members - from all over the world.
My client was approached by an associate who wanted to control her website for her, who had no experience - my client agreed.
The great news
The site was already ranking with a Google Page Rank of 3 and 4 across the many pages, news items were added regularly, and each of those pages was linked to by many, many websites across the internet. If you don't really know how powerful - and wonderful - this is, trust me - it is something to be proud of.
The webpages were also bookmarked by many hundreds of individuals, like you and me, because we liked that site and when we had a moment over a coffee we'd go back and have a look and a read.
The website was created in a fabulous content management system (CMS), one which many of my clients use.
The first - and only mistake
What happened next is so sad I can hardly bear to think about it, but it could have been avoided.
The new web person doesn't know that :
- you never ever ever - EVER - delete a webpage (you can turn it off, but don't delete)
- you never - EVER - delete an entire 'live' website which has worldwide traffic, unless the business no longer exists
- their actions have delete a password-protected Membership part of the site, including all other images and valuable conent
- hundreds of images uploaded over the past ten years would disappear
- all of it - gone - in the click of a mouse.
CLICK.
Then ... the sound of silence.
Ten years of hard work down the drain.
My heart went out to my client when I saw what had happened. I know it was her decision, but she didn't really understand that this person knew absolutely nothing about websites, keywords, all the search engine optimisation - all that had been done over the past few years was now wiped off the face of the earth. If I had've known what was about to happen, I would have stopped them and explained all this.
Unfortunately, now it's too late for her.
Conclusion?
But it's not too late for you! Read on ...
This client now has a one page 'holding page' instead of an active website. It will take YEARS to climb back up through the search engines to get to the top of her field again - and this is if - and only IF - she has a web person who knows what they're doing.
What should you do to avoid this type of catastrophe?
I don't want to scare you all, but I do want you to think about how precious your website is - if you do nothing else to your website this week, please - please - back it up.
Here are two options - both work exceptionally well:
Windows Users
==========
Download back-up software at http://www.httrack.com
Mac Users
==========
Download back-up software at http://sitesucker.us
Once you have backed up your site - add the date to the Folder name, to keep multiple backups - just in case.
I hope this never happens to any of you.
For each of you who backs up their website this week, please email me - I'll send you a freebie document related to websites as a wee gift.
